Abstract

The proliferation of small arms and light weapons is the driving force behind the increasing rate of violence in Nigeria. Hence, this paper explores the proliferation of small arms and light weapons (SALW) in Nigeria. According to some scholars the proliferation of small arms and light weapons has been responsible for violent conflict, crime and general insecurity in Nigeria. This has become one of the banes to security and developmental challenges in Nigeria in the last two decades. Proliferation of small arms and light weapons across the country has caused monumental loss to lives and properties. In view of the foregoing, this study seeks to provide answers to the following questions: what are the causes and effects of proliferation of small arms and light weapons in Nigeria and how it affects peace and security in Nigeria. What are the challenges faced by 1government in combating this menace.
